Our Mission
To promote
the preservation and revitalization of our downtown as the heart of the Sumner
Community.
What is the Sumner Downtown Association?
-
The Sumner Downtown Association is a nonprofit
corporation formed in 1973 by local preservationists, business leaders,
political leaders and conscientious citizens dedicated to support, preserve,
and revitalize the Historic Downtown area. Sumner Downtown
Association, also known as the SDA, is committed to sponsoring programs and
activities that fulfill the following purposes: Historic
Preservation, Community Education and lessening the Burden of Government.
-
Traditionally, downtown Sumner was the civic, cultural, economic
and social center of a thriving farming community, but more recently has been
affected by the rapidly growing residential/commercial development and
disappearing farmland which has, in turn, impacted our downtown. Simply
put, the primary purpose of SDA is to preserve the historic infrastructure of
downtown, improve appearances, and facilitate renewed vitality.
-
SDA is following the nationally accredited Main Street Program
four prong approach to revitalization of downtowns, to-wit: 1) Organization;
2) Promotion; 3) Economic Restructuring and 4) Design.
-
SDA will be working with local government to establish a
downtown historical registry as the first step in creating a program which
provides incentives to property owners for improvements and remodel projects as
one piece of the revitalization process.
-
Membership Dues are utilized for these purposes and also include
beautification projects like the flower baskets and holiday decorations,
promotional expenses such as radio/newspaper advertising campaigns and an an
award winning community float which appears in three local parades, and
organizational staffing expenses.
